How I Realized Los Algodones Is a Safe Town

Safety has always been one of my top priorities, especially as a woman traveling and living on my own. After spending many years living in the United States, I became used to certain freedoms, like walking comfortably in public spaces or using my phone freely while outside.

When I later moved to Mexico City, I quickly realized that things were different. In such a large metropolitan area, there were places where I had to be cautious about using my phone or walking alone at certain hours. Unfortunately, during my time there, I experienced several incidents of theft. Those experiences made safety an even more important factor for me when deciding where to live next.

So when I moved to Los Algodones, Baja California, I wanted to make sure it was truly a safe place, especially as a woman relocating alone.

At first, I noticed that Los Algodones felt very different from a large city. It’s a small, welcoming town built largely around tourism. Thousands of visitors, mostly from the United States and Canada, come here every week for dental care, pharmacies, eyeglasses, and medical services. The atmosphere felt calm, organized, and focused on serving visitors.

But there was one particular moment that truly confirmed for me that this town was safe.

One evening, I had an American female patient visiting for dental treatment. As part of my role assisting patients, I coordinated her appointments, transportation, and hotel stay. After dropping her off at her hotel earlier in the day, I made sure the hotel staff knew they could contact me if she needed anything, something I always do for the patients I help.

Later that evening, around 10:00 PM, I received a call from the hotel.

They explained that my patient had taken some medication that made her feel dizzy and had passed out outside near the hotel. What happened next was something that truly stood out to me. A local man who had seen her around the hotel area recognized that she might be a visitor. Instead of ignoring the situation, he helped her up and safely brought her back to the hotel so she could receive assistance.

After living for years in a very large city, I had never heard a story end this way.

That moment showed me something important about Los Algodones: people here look out for visitors.

This is a small community where many businesses depend on tourism, and locals understand how important it is for visitors to feel comfortable and safe. Many residents know the hotels, the dental clinics, and the businesses that serve international patients every day.

Today, thousands of Americans and Canadians visit Los Algodones every week for dental care, and many of them return year after year. The town has built its reputation around serving visitors in a professional and welcoming environment.

Of course, like anywhere in the world, it’s always wise to use common sense while traveling. But overall, Los Algodones has proven to be a calm, visitor-friendly town where patients can feel comfortable coming for treatment.

For me, that one moment confirmed what I had already started to feel:Los Algodones is a place where people look out for one another.

And that’s when I truly knew it was a safe town.
